Linda crawled out of bed with that tight feeling in her gut. No reason she could name. The moment her feet hit the living room floor it spread like a rash. Then the TV flared with Diane Jones's voice, cool and certain, and Linda knew—really knew—that nothing worked the same anymore. Furniture, walls, the light itself. Panic drove her out the door without shoes.
She crashed into Leslie halfway down the block. A sharp glance from the stranger, no recognition of the fracture that had opened under everything. Linda kept running until Karen’s steady stride cut across the sidewalk. Words tumbled out in one panicked stream; Karen stared back like she was listening to traffic noise. Linda fled home.
Leslie walked away shaking. The touch left a smear in her vision—an uninvited word flashing over and over. She typed it into her phone. Zero hits. The library became the next stop.
In the salon, Amanda wiped scissors while Tanya snapped about another girl who wouldn’t commit. Amanda’s chest ached every time Tanya’s laugh dipped lower, every time the mirror caught that flash of tongue against gloss. Then Tanya muttered the word again and the air warped for both of them, fast and sick-sweet.
Back on her kitchen table, Leslie hunched over borrowed books—nothing. She snapped a text to her wife, phone shaking.
At the door Linda froze. A stranger in her living room, long blond hair, calm smile. Name still unknown, purpose sharper than a razor.
Two blocks away the salon lights flicked off. Amanda’s confession hung in the dark; Tanya’s mouth found hers before the echo faded, hungry, certain, the spark racing straight to bone.
