Dee was long gone down the hall when the two barely-legals, Laney and Skye, exchanged a look in the rumpled room. Skye jabbed her thumb toward the hallway. "C'mon. Staring at that mess is only gonna sting harder later." Reluctant groans gave way to dragged-out boxes and dust-bunnies. Among the debris, a battered diary tumbled out. Skye flipped pages like they were flipping a coin. Entry after entry mentioned a girl Dee couldn’t quit obsessing over back in her twenties, raw longing wrapped in all-caps fear. Words like "lip-gloss and knees weak" jumped off the paper. Their eyes met over the ink. "We’re telling her," Skye breathed. Upstairs, Dee’s face reddened when they surrendered the book and the secret with it. First came the lecture about privacy, sharp and quiet, but it dissolved fast when they admitted they knew exactly why she had buried that page under ticket stubs and movie stubs and silence. Dee’s mouth opened, closed, opened again. "Different era," she said. "If you kissed her, people knew. End of story." Skye stepped closer; Laney mirrored her. Fingers brushed Dee’s wrists, soft, testing. Dee’s breath snapped tight, then she leaned in, tasting the same forbidden heat she’d never risked back then. Clothes slipped faster than excuses. Dee’s hands trembled when they first cupped Laney’s bare breast, Skye’s mouth at her throat. Skin against skin tasted sweet with that late-dawning freedom, sweat-slick, hurried, full of every kiss Dee thought she’d already missed.
