Alison Rey finds Nina Elle scrubbing floors. She keeps complaining about Marie ignoring her, Marie being selfish. Nina wipes sweat from her forehead and listens. She knows her own daughter Lily’s a handful too, but when she defends Marie she also makes Alison feel whole. Their voices drop. Their knees touch. Alison leans in and kisses Nina quick on the lips. The cloth drops from Nina’s hand. She pulls back at first, heart pounding, because Marie and Lily are still somewhere in the house, but the heat between them is harder to ignore than family noise. Alison tugs Nina closer, needs skin and breath and someone who sees her. Nina’s tired of pretending she doesn’t ache too. So she gives in, hands sliding under Alison’s shirt, hungry mouths finding each other again and again while the wet mop lies forgotten on the tile.
