Lenny and Martha had everything set. Streamers, balloons, a bassinet that cost more than their car payment. Their surrogate was supposed to walk through that door with the kid that wasn’t biologically theirs but had kept them hopeful for nine straight months. Sandra showed up empty-handed instead. Martha’s face cracked first. She grabbed the back of the couch like it might hold her up. The words came out slow, like Sandra was choking on them: she’d changed her mind. The baby was hers now.
Martha dropped. Not metaphorically—her knees actually gave. She clawed at her own thighs, breath catching on sobs that filled the living room faster than the balloons ever did. Lenny stayed standing. Offered money. Offered the house. Offered whatever Sandra wanted to sign on the dotted line and forget this nightmare happened. Sandra looked bored until the offers dried up. Then she said the quiet part out loud: she wanted a family. Her own. Not a check.
Something clicked behind Lenny’s eyes. He moved closer. Close enough that Sandra could smell his cologne and the sweat underneath it. He told her to stay. Move in. Be the third piece they’d been pretending three people weren’t necessary to raise a kid. Sandra didn’t buy it at first—thought they were offering her a guest room and a chore chart. So Lenny proved it the way most promises get sealed when words stop working. He and Martha boxed her in, hands and mouths promising they could share everything they usually kept behind closed doors. Right there on the living-room rug they’d vacuumed that morning.
