Bella Rolland lingered at the door, suitcase in hand, fighting back the dread. Leaving Mocha alone felt wrong. Still, she forced the words out: you can see other women while I'm gone, just don’t be alone. Mocha’s face tightened, worry cutting through her smile. She didn’t want anyone else. But when Bella squeezed her hand and whispered, promise you’ll try if it gets too lonely, Mocha sighed and agreed.
A year dragged by. Texts flickered between time zones. Mocha’s messages moved from lonely nights to cautious dates. Bella read each line twice, stomach twisting. What if, when she finally stepped off that plane, someone else already owned the space she used to fill?
The day she landed, the airport smelled like burnt coffee and warm bodies. Mocha burst from the crowd, breathless, crushing Bella against her so hard the name tags clinked. Bella felt a surge—raw, impatient need—and her fear cracked. They kissed, quick and dirty, hands gripping like they could claw back the missing months.
Later, in the quiet of home, Mocha’s grin dimmed. She admitted the dates turned into someone named Ember. Bella laughed once, sharp, and sat on the arm of the couch. “So now I get replaced?”
Mocha’s gaze locked onto hers. “No one replaces you. I just had company until you came back.” She reached across the distance, fingers brushing Bella’s knee. “But you’re gonna like her. Trust me. And if you’re open to it—if we all say yes—we could try this thing together.” Bella’s breath caught. Her pulse beat in her throat. She swallowed, finally nodding. “Alright. I’ll meet her.”
Hours later, Ember stepped into the low light of the living room, dark eyes steady, smile soft but certain. Bella’s muscles stayed taut at first, every word out of Ember’s mouth another careful test. Then the walls started to drop. Ember listened without flinching when Bella spilled the fear that her place had shrunk in her own home. Ember leaned in, voice low. “There’s room for all of us. Nothing’s taken from you.”
They kept talking, the air thick with wine and confession. By the third glass, Bella’s laugh cracked open, and something inside her loosened for good. “Let’s see what this feels like,” she said. Ember’s hand found hers on the table, warm and patient. Mocha watched them from across the room, eyes glowing like she’d finally gotten everything she wanted.
