Rachael dragged herself through the door at ten past midnight, heels slapping tile, and found Reese still folding laundry on the couch. Again. Husband's not here. She bit down on the apology already rising in her throat. "I don't mind," Reese said before Rachael could finish. "Kinda like this part." Her eyes lingered on Rachael's loose collar, the two undone buttons she never noticed until now. "That's not the point," Rachael said. She set her keys down hard, slid out of her blazer, started rolling sleeves. "Come on. If you're stuck here, at least let me pitch in." They moved into the kitchen together. The air was tight between fridge and counter, bodies brushing when neither planned it. Reese reached for a high cabinet; Rachael caught the slow flex of her arm, the T-shirt riding up, skin and muscle right there for the wanting. One heartbeat. Two. Then Rachael's hand steadied Reese's waist on the way down—an unnecessary touch that lasted half a second too long. Reese turned with the dishes, close enough that her chest grazed Rachael's. Both women froze. No one breathed for a moment. The clock on the wall ticked louder than their pulses. Rachael's wedding ring shone dull under the sink light. She kept her fingers flat on the counter to stop them from wandering. Reese's gaze dropped to that ring, then back up, saying everything they'd both locked down for months—late pickups, shared whiskey, private laughter that lasted too long after midnight. They kept working. Brushes turned deliberate. A finger traced the rim of a glass too slowly. Reese swallowed. Rachael licked the corner of her mouth without thinking. Silence pressed in hot, thick, full of what neither of them would name out loud but both already tasted. One glance held too long, a palm sliding over a damp dishcloth and catching skin instead, and the gravity between them shifted—closer, heavier, inevitable. Still they didn't speak. The night waited, daring them to be the first to break.
