Evelyn thinks her old room sits empty. Wrong. A young couple moved in last month and the noises seep through the walls—laughs, gasps, the squeak of bedsprings. Every sound lands where it hurts. That bed used to belong to her and Mark, the place they broke every rule she still pretends to follow. Tonight the laughter pulls her closer. She kneels, eye to the keyhole. Inside, a blonde stranger stands bare-breasted, red panties glowing against pale skin. Arya is on her knees, lips sealed around one stiff nipple while Finn’s fingers slip beneath the thin fabric, stroking the wet spot there. Evelyn’s thighs tense. Clothes hit the floor. Sweat shines on skin; hands clutch sheets and hair and flesh. When they finally collapse, gasping and slick, Evelyn stays frozen at the hole until her knees ache, the taste of copper in her mouth and her own heartbeat crashing in her ears.
