That Which She Hates Most

The door cracks open and Leah leans out, strung tight with nerves and hunger. Evelyn waits on the step, clipboard pressed to her chest, a practiced smile on her lips. "Evelyn Torres," she says, voice smooth as warm bourbon, "home-study for the adoption." Leah steps aside, breath coming quick, because every word, every tick of the pen could decide whether she and Toni get to keep what they want most.
They settle in the living room. Evelyn's pen glides over the form, and Leah chatters on about schedules and playrooms. Smiles pass between them like currency, but Leah's fingers twitch on her knees. Evelyn's eyes keep returning to the photographs on the mantel, catching the easy press of two women in one frame, yet nothing in her posture breaks.
Then the lock turns and Toni's boots hit the foyer. She calls Leah's name and the room shifts. Leah shoots up, crosses the floor, and grabs Toni by the waist. Their kiss lands open-mouthed and hungry, tongues grazing before they part. Evelyn's polite mask flickers; her pen digs into the paper like it might bleed. "Evelyn, meet my wife," Leah beams, blind to the new ice in Evelyn's stare.
The social worker stands, declares the visit complete, and leaves before Toni can offer coffee. Leah collapses against Toni's chest. "We nailed it," she whispers, already naming imaginary kids. The front door snaps shut behind Evelyn with a sound like a promise breaking.
Weeks drag, then an envelope arrives thick with final judgment. They tear it open together and watch the future curdle in black ink: "observed inappropriate behavior." The phrase lands like a slap. "She saw us kiss," Toni says. "That's all she needed." Rage simmers low and mean as they thumb through courthouse footage, learned habits, scheduled affairs.
Later Evelyn's office hums under dying fluorescents. She's the last silhouette in the grid of cubicles, husband miles away and two doors down from her assistant's moans last Tuesday. The door whispers open. Leah and Toni step into the spill of desk light like judgment in leather and denim. "You sunk us because we fuck women," Leah spits. Evelyn's throat works, denial already dead behind her teeth.
They lay out printed receipts, hotel keycards, photos of Evelyn's hand up another skirt. "You'll rewrite that report," Toni says, voice velvet over teeth, "but first you'll spread those legs and beg for it." Evelyn stares at the pictures of her marriage crumbling in 4K, then sinks to her knees, voice cracking on the first syllable of please. Leah's fingers tighten in her hair. Tonight, Evelyn learns how quickly mercy can taste like payback.
