The limo crawls through traffic. Senator Gregory stays on the phone, thanking donors for the “household first” event, while his wife watches the city blur past. She hates these nights, hates the fake smile, the conservative suits, but the money and the freedom he leaves her make up for it. When he finally hangs up he asks the driver about the airport. “I want to get back before William lands,” he says. Mrs. Gregory’s smirk flickers. “You didn’t mention he was coming.” Her husband squeezes her knee. “He’ll be here all week, plenty of time for you two.” She turns back to the glass and feels the trap close.
