Kenzie sits at the table, legs parted, spooning cereal when Cadey wanders in. "Big test later," Kenzie says, eyes fixed on the bowl. Cadey leans against the counter, asks if she wants dinner after. Kenzie shakes her head like she barely heard, reminds her she’ll be buried in books with Gina. Cadey flushes, pushes off the counter and slips out. Cadey gasps, tries to twist away, whispering Kenzie could walk in any second. Gina hushes her with teeth on her neck: "She won’t mind. She picked you out."
